Stage 1
The First Torii
You leave the city at dawn. The road begins under the great torii standing in the sea.
An ekiden across a Japan of legend. Everyone follows their own plan, the community moves forward together.

You get up, you go out, you come home. Nobody saw the session you just held, and nobody will share it. That is running as we live it.
Beginners, marathoners and Sunday runners move along the same road. Each of them keeps their place, their pace and their own plan. You watch them run, and they watch you.
A held session counts as one, whether you run thirty minutes or three hours. Kilometres do not count. The beginner who runs twice a week and the ultra runner who runs six times move the same road forward.
Every stage has its pass, sized to the real group. When the sum of held sessions reaches it, the whole community walks under the torii at the same time.
The Road crosses seven stages painted like a woodblock print, and vermilion torii mark the end of each one. You only see the start: the rest belongs to those who walk.

At certain points along the road, you set a stone and leave a word. Those who pass after you read it, and your stone on the last cairn makes you a finisher.
Every runner who completes the Road will have a tree planted. And finishing cannot be faked: you have to hold your plan stage after stage, then set your stone on the last cairn.
The First Expedition already showed what this community can do together. From its start in Iten all the way to Olympia, it covered 5,000 kilometers in 95 days.
